Preferir: one irregular form
Preferir (to prefer) is an -ir verb with one surprise: in the eu form, the e of the stem becomes i. Every other present-tense form is regular.
| Pronoun | Preferir | Gostar |
|---|---|---|
| eu | prefiro | gosto |
| você / ele / ela | prefere | gosta |
| nós | preferimos | gostamos |
| vocês / eles / elas | preferem | gostam |
Unlike gostar, preferir takes no de — it goes straight into a noun or a verb:
- Prefiro chá. — I prefer tea.
- A Luana prefere ficar em casa. — Luana prefers to stay at home.
To offer someone a choice: Você prefere praia ou piscina? — Do you prefer the beach or the pool?
