Where ser describes what something is, estar describes how or where it is at the moment. Use it for:

• feelings and moods — Estou cansada. (I'm tired.)
• temporary conditions — O café está quente. (The coffee is hot.)
• where someone is right now — A Marina está no Rio. (Marina is in Rio.)
