Conceito novo
The shape of an argument
A good argument in Italian has four moves — and a set phrase for each:
| Move | Phrases |
|---|---|
| Open | Innanzitutto,… · Prima di tutto,… · Per cominciare,… |
| Add | In secondo luogo,… · Inoltre,… · E poi… |
| Concede | È vero che…, però… · Bisogna ammettere che…, ma… |
| Conclude | Per concludere,… · In conclusione,… · Insomma,… |
Conceding before you object makes you sound reasonable — and much harder to argue with:
È vero che costa tanto, però ne vale la pena. — True, it costs a lot, but it's worth it.
Ne vale la pena — it's worth it — is worth learning whole.
