A travel story needs both pasts — the passato prossimo for what you did, the imperfetto for what it was like:

Siamo arrivati lunedì. Il mare era azzurro e faceva caldo. Il primo giorno siamo andati a Vernazza, dove c'erano tantissimi turisti.

• Events, one after another → siamo arrivati, siamo andati, abbiamo visitato.
• Scenery, weather, feelings → era, faceva, c'erano, eravamo stanchi.

And don't forget the auxiliary: movement and reflexive verbs take essere and agree — siamo arrivati, ci siamo seduti — everything else takes avere: ho comprato, abbiamo visitato.
