Demonstratives, comparatives and clothes

    Questo e quello: this and that

    Point things out the Italian way — questo for here, quello for there — and learn why quello changes like the article.

    • Questo / questa / questi / queste — this, these (near me). Quest'anno.
    • Quello before a noun changes like the article: quel, quello, quell', quella, quei, quegli, quelle.
    • On its own: quello, quella, quelli, quelle — that one, those.
    • Questo qui — this one here; quello lì — that one there.
    • In Florence you may hear codesto — that one near you.

    Vestiti e colori: clothes, colours, sizes

    Name what you're wearing, make colours agree — or not — ask for your size and try it on.

    • Clothes: il vestito, la camicia, i pantaloni, la gonna, la giacca, il maglione, le scarpe.
    • Colours go after the noun and agree: rosso / rossa / rossi / rosse, verde / verdi.
    • Invariable colours: blu, rosa, viola, beige.
    • Taglia for clothes, numero for shoes — Posso provarlo? in il camerino.
    • Come mi sta? — Ti sta benissimo! È troppo stretto / largo.

    Più, meno, come: comparing things

    Cheaper, more elegant, just as nice — compare with più, meno and come, meet migliore and bellissimo, and try a little haggling.

    • Più … di and meno … di: più cara della gonna, meno care degli stivali.
    • Di merges with the article: del, della, degli.
    • Equal: come (or tanto … quanto): bella come il vestito.
    • Migliore (better), peggiore (worse); -issimo for very: bellissimo.
    • Che between two adjectives, verbs or prepositional phrases: più bella che pratica.
    • At the market: Mi fa uno sconto?

    Fare spese: an outfit for the party

    Polite shop Italian with Lei, lo prendo and paying at the till — and Marina and Luana's hunt for something to wear to Marcos's party.

    • In shops it's Lei: Posso aiutarla? Desidera? Mi dica.
    • Sto solo guardando · Cerco… · Quanto costa / costano?
    • Deciding: lo / la / li / le prendo — or Ci penso, grazie.
    • Paying: con la carta or in contanti — and keep lo scontrino.
    • La bella figura — and i saldi in January and July.
