To ask the time, say Che ore sono? or Che ora è? — both are perfectly normal.

The answer is plural, because you're counting le ore, the hours: Sono le + the number.

Sono le undici.	It's eleven o'clock.

Three times are singular — there's only one of each:

• È l'una. — It's one o'clock.
• È mezzogiorno. — It's midday.
• È mezzanotte. — It's midnight.
