Conceito novo

Lei borrows the lui / lei form

When you speak to someone as Lei, the verb takes the lui / lei form — the third person. That's true of every verb you know:

To a friend (tu) To a stranger (Lei)
parlare Parli inglese? Parla inglese?
cercare Cerchi qualcosa? Cerca qualcosa?
essere Sei di qui? È di qui?
avere Hai una mappa? Ha una mappa?
stare Come stai? Come sta?

Italians rarely say the word Lei itself — the verb is enough: Parla inglese? If you need to be clear, add it after the verb: E Lei, come sta?

To get a stranger's attention: Mi scusi or Scusi. To a friend: Scusa. If someone's in your way: Permesso! — excuse me, may I get by?
