Essere: the everyday “to be”

Essere is Italian's main verb for to be. Use it for:

  • identity — Sono Marina. (I'm Marina.)
  • origin — Sono di Berlino. (I'm from Berlin.)
  • nationality — Marina è tedesca. (Marina is German.)
  • profession — Luana è studentessa. (Luana is a student.)
  • place — Siamo a Firenze. (We're in Florence.)
  • what something is like — Il caffè è buono. (The coffee is good.)

Your home town takes di: Sono di Berlino, Marcos è di Firenze. Nationalities take a small letter and change for a woman: tedesco / tedesca, americano / americana; those in -e stay the same: inglese, francese.
