Conceito novo

Two new compound tenses

To imagine a different past — something that didn't happen — French needs two compound tenses. Both are built exactly like the passé composé, with the same auxiliary (avoir or être) and the same agreement. Only the auxiliary changes tense:

Passé composé Plus-que-parfait (had done) Conditionnel passé (would have done)
j'ai su j'avais su j'aurais su
tu as pris tu avais pris tu aurais pris
nous avons vu nous avions vu nous aurions vu
je suis resté(e) j'étais resté(e) je serais resté(e)
elle est partie elle était partie elle serait partie
ils sont venus ils étaient venus ils seraient venus
  • Plus-que-parfait = auxiliary in the imparfait + past participle.
  • Conditionnel passé = auxiliary in the conditional + past participle.

The third si pattern puts them together — si + plus-que-parfait, then the conditionnel passé: Si j'avais su, je serais venue. — If I'd known, I'd have come.
