Préférer: an accent that moves
Préférer (to prefer) takes the regular -er endings, but watch the second accent: it becomes è wherever the ending is silent — much as se lever gives je me lève.
| Pronoun | préférer |
|---|---|
| je | préfère |
| tu | préfères |
| il / elle / on | préfère |
| nous | préférons |
| vous | préférez |
| ils / elles | préfèrent |
The è sounds like the e in bed. Like aimer, préférer takes le, la, les for things in general, or goes straight into an infinitive — with no de: Je préfère le thé. Je préfère marcher.
