Many verbs reach a person through à: parler à (talk to), téléphoner à (phone), donner à (give to), offrir à (give as a present), écrire à (write to), répondre à (answer), dire à (tell).

Replace à + the person with an indirect object pronoun — placed, like le and la, before the verb:

Je parle à Marcos.	Je lui parle. — I'm talking to him.
Je téléphone à Luana.	Je lui téléphone. — I'm phoning her.
J'écris à mes parents.	Je leur écris. — I'm writing to them.
On offre des fleurs à Rosa.	On lui offre des fleurs. — We're giving her flowers.

• lui = to him or to her — what counts is that it's one person, not whether a man or a woman.
• leur = to them.
• Negative: Je ne lui parle pas. — I'm not talking to him.
