The Conditional Mood

Would: the -isi- conditional

    Olisin, menisin: the -isi- conditional

    Would, in one syllable: slot -isi- into the verb — and Marina is back in Helsinki.

    • The conditional = stem + -isi- + ending: olisin, menisin, puhuisin, haluaisin.
    • -e and -i at the end of the stem drop: menisin, oppisin; long vowels shorten: saisin, joisin, söisin.
    • Always the strong grade: ottaisin, tekisin, näkisin.
    • Past ostin (I bought) ≠ conditional ostaisin (I would buy).
    • Negative: en / et / ei / emme / ette / eivät + menisi.

    Saisinko? Voisitko? Asking nicely

    Finnish has no word for “please” — the conditional does the job. Polite requests at the café and at work.

    • Finnish politeness lives in the verb: Saisinko…? Voisitko…? Olisiko sinulla…?
    • Haluaisin / Ottaisin — I'd like / I'll have; add kiitos for please.
    • For a group or very formally: Voisitteko…? Olisiko teillä…?
    • At the counter: Mitä saisi olla? — Saako olla muuta? — mukaan = to take away.
    • Accepting an offer: Kiitos, mielelläni. Declining: Ei kiitos.

    Sinun kannattaisi…: giving advice

    Pitäisi, kannattaisi and sinuna — how Finns give advice — as Luana prepares Marina for her first client meeting.

    • Advice: genitive + pitäisi (should) or kannattaisi (it'd be worth it): Sinun kannattaisi tulla aikaisin.
    • Negative: Sinun ei pitäisi… — the verb never changes for the person.
    • Sinuna + conditional = if I were you: Sinuna odottaisin.
    • Sanoisin sen näin — let me put it this way: a phrase that buys you time.
    • Finnish meetings start on the dot — be there five minutes early.

    Olisipa…! Wishes and daydreams

    If only…: olisipa, kunpa and mielelläni — and how Marina's first client meeting really went.

    • Wishes: Olisipa…! (conditional + -pa, verb first) or Kunpa… + conditional.
    • Mielelläni + conditional = I'd love to: Tulisin mielelläni!
    • Olisi kiva, jos… — it'd be nice if… (both verbs conditional).
    • Ehtisitkö…? — would you have time to…? (ehtiä, strong grade ehtisi-).
    • Toivoisin, että… — I'd hope that…
