Stem + i + ending
The Finnish simple past — the imperfekti — puts an -i- between the stem and the ending you already know. The endings don't change at all:
| puhua | asua | olla | |
|---|---|---|---|
| minä | puhuin | asuin | olin |
| sinä | puhuit | asuit | olit |
| hän | puhui | asui | oli |
| me | puhuimme | asuimme | olimme |
| te | puhuitte | asuitte | olitte |
| he | puhuivat | asuivat | olivat |
One person needs no ending in the past either: hän puhui — he / she spoke.
To find the stem, take the minä form and drop the -n: puhun → puhu-. Then watch the last vowel:
- -o, -u, -y, -ö stay: puhuin, sanoin, asuin
- -e drops: luen → luin, tulen → tulin, olen → olin
- -a, -ä usually drop: ostan → ostin, pidän → pidin
