Must: the person goes into the genitive
Must works differently from can and want. The verb täytyy (or pitää) never changes, and the person who must do something takes the genitive -n — the same form as minun (my):
| Finnish | English |
|---|---|
| Minun täytyy mennä. | I must go. / I've got to go. |
| Sinun pitää levätä. | You must rest. |
| Hänen täytyy tehdä töitä. | He / she has to work. |
| Meidän täytyy opiskella. | We have to study. |
| Marinan täytyy siivota. | Marina has to tidy up. |
Literally it's “of me it is necessary to go”. Täytyy and pitää mean the same here; pitää is a little more everyday.
The classic mistake: Minä täytyy ✗. The person is always in the genitive: Minun täytyy ✓.
