What you'll hear, what you'll say

Finnish English
Mikä teitä vaivaa? What seems to be the problem?
Kuinka kauan? — Kolme päivää. How long (for)? — Three days.
Tarvitsen lääkäriä. I need a doctor.
Tarvitsenko lääkettä? Do I need medicine?
Se ei ole vakava. It's nothing serious.
Avatkaa suu, olkaa hyvä. Open your mouth, please.

Two endings to notice:

  • Lääkäriä, lääkettä — the verb tarvita (to need) usually takes the partitive: you need some help, some medicine.
  • Lääkäri → lääkäriin, lääkärissä — you go to the doctor's (Menen lääkäriin) and you're at the doctor's (Olen lääkärissä): the inner cases, as if the doctor were a building.
