Conceito novo
Verb first, then -ko / -kö
English asks with do or by swapping words around. Finnish has one simple move: put the verb first and glue on -ko or -kö.
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| Sinä puhut suomea. | Puhutko suomea? — Do you speak Finnish? |
| Hän asuu täällä. | Asuuko hän täällä? — Does he live here? |
| Te ostatte kahvia. | Ostatteko kahvia? — Are you buying coffee? |
| Luana on kotona. | Onko Luana kotona? — Is Luana at home? |
| Sinä ymmärrät. | Ymmärrätkö? — Do you understand? |
Which one, -ko or -kö? Vowel harmony decides: back-vowel verbs take -ko (puhutko, onko), front-vowel verbs take -kö (ymmärrätkö, tiedätkö).
There's no do in Finnish, and no rising-tone trick needed: the ending alone makes it a question.
