Hello and goodbye
| Finnish | English | When |
|---|---|---|
| Hyvää huomenta | Good morning | Until mid-morning — Huomenta! for short |
| Hyvää päivää | Good day | A polite daytime greeting — Päivää! |
| Hyvää iltaa | Good evening | Arriving from late afternoon on — Iltaa! |
| Hyvää yötä | Good night | Only when someone is off to bed — Öitä! |
| Näkemiin | Goodbye | Polite, with anyone |
| Hei hei / Moi moi | Bye! | Casual — doubling hei or moi turns hi into bye |
| Nähdään! | See you! | When you'll meet again |
| Hyvää illanjatkoa! | Enjoy the rest of your evening! | Leaving a shop or a friend in the evening |
Hyvää means good — with the partitive ending you met in the last lesson — so every greeting literally wishes you “some good morning”, “some good evening”.
