Emails, meetings and the formal register

  1. 1

¿Tú o usted?: choosing your register

When Spain says *tú* and when *usted*, five ways to ask for the same thing — and the office verbs that make you sound professional.

    • In Spain tú is the everyday default; usted adds respect and distance — older people, a first formal contact, senior clients.
    • Usted takes the él / ella form, with le / lo / la and su; never usted puedes.
    • Tutear — to switch to tú: ¿Nos tuteamos?
    • The conditional is the courtesy tool: ¿Podría…?, ¿Tendría…?, ¿Le vendría bien…?
    • Office verbs: enviar / remitir, solicitar, revisar, solucionar, ponerse en contacto con.
    • On the phone: ¿Dígame? to answer, Soy yo for Speaking.

Estimada…, Un cordial saludo: the business email

The five-part skeleton, the colon after the greeting, the set phrases — and the subjunctive hiding in every polite email.

    • Five parts: Asunto, Saludo, Apertura, Cuerpo, Despedida.
    • Estimado / Estimada agrees with the reader — and the greeting ends with a colon: Estimada Sra. García:
    • Le adjunto…; as an adjective, adjunto agrees: le envío adjunta la factura.
    • Quedo a la espera de su respuesta · Quedo a su disposición · Un cordial saludo / Atentamente.
    • Politeness runs on the subjunctive: Espero que se encuentre bien, Le agradecería que me enviara…, En caso de que tenga…

Yo diría que…: the job interview

Talk about your background, strengths and weaknesses in the measured, courteous tone a Spanish interview tends to reward.

    • Key words: el puesto, la trayectoria, el punto fuerte / débil, la fortaleza, el equipo, contratar.
    • The conditional keeps claims measured: Yo diría que…, Me gustaría…, Podría aportar… — decir gives diría.
    • Hypotheticals about the job: Si me seleccionaran, ¿con qué equipo trabajaría?
    • Present a weakness as work in progress: Estoy aprendiendo a…
    • Start with usted, follow the interviewer's lead, and bring questions of your own.

    • Meeting words: el orden del día, el acta, el plazo, aplazar, revisar, entregar, el presupuesto.
    • Proposals take the present subjunctive: Propongo que dividamos…, Sugiero que…, Es importante que…
    • After a conditional, the imperfect subjunctive: Sería mejor que el cliente enviara…
    • Push back softly: Entiendo, pero ¿sería posible…?
