Conceito novo

If I had…, I would have…

To imagine a different past, both halves step back a tense:

Si lo hubiera sabido, habría venido antes. — If I'd known, I'd have come earlier.

  • The si half: hubiera (the imperfect subjunctive of haber) + past participle.
  • The other half: habría (the conditional of haber) + past participle.
Pronoun Si… …then
yo hubiera sabido habría venido
tú hubieras sabido habrías venido
él / ella / usted hubiera sabido habría venido
nosotros hubiéramos sabido habríamos venido
vosotros hubierais sabido habríais venido
ellos / ellas / ustedes hubieran sabido habrían venido

In speech, many Spaniards use hubiera in both halves — Si lo hubiera sabido, hubiera venido antes — and that's correct too. The -se form, hubiese, works in the si half.
