The verbs that break the rule

The yo-form trick fails for verbs whose yo form doesn't end in a plain -o — soy, estoy, voy, sé, doy. These have their own subjunctive, and you'll need them constantly:

Pronoun Ser Estar Ir Saber
yo sea esté vaya sepa
tú seas estés vayas sepas
él / ella / usted sea esté vaya sepa
nosotros seamos estemos vayamos sepamos
vosotros seáis estéis vayáis sepáis
ellos / ellas / ustedes sean estén vayan sepan
  • Estar keeps its accents on the ending: esté, estés, estén.
  • Two more to know: dar → dé, with an accent that keeps it apart from the preposition de; and hay → haya: Espero que haya sitio. — I hope there's room.
  • Tener is irregular too, but it follows the yo-form rule: tengo → tenga.
