The scene and the event

Real stories use both past tenses together. Think of a film:

  • the imperfecto sets the scene — what was going on, what things were like;
  • the indefinido moves the plot — something happens, once, and it's over.

Estaba en casa cuando sonó el teléfono. — I was at home when the phone rang.

Imperfecto — the scene Indefinido — what happened
Dormía… …cuando Bidu ladró.
Hacía sol… …así que fuimos a la playa.
Tenía veinte años… …cuando llegó a Madrid.

For something in progress, Spanish often uses estar in the imperfecto + the -ndo form: Estaba durmiendo cuando Bidu ladró. — I was sleeping when Bidu barked. Here dormía and estaba durmiendo mean the same.

New words: sonar — to ring; ladrar — to bark.
