The Past

The pretérito indefinido — telling what happened

  1. 1

Hablé, comí, abrí: the regular past

The pretérito indefinido — what happened yesterday, last night or on Saturday — and why one accent changes everything.

    • The pretérito indefinido tells what happened at a definite time: Ayer hablé con Luana.
    • Endings: -ar → -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron; -er / -ir → -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.
    • Accents carry meaning: hablo (I speak) vs habló (he spoke).
    • Nosotros of -ar and -ir verbs looks like the present — a time word like ayer or anoche tells you it's past.
    • Me gustó (one thing), me gustaron (several).

Fui, hice, tuve: the big irregulars

Was and went share one form — plus hacer, tener, estar and the family of irregular pasts that end in -e and -o.

    • Ser and ir share their past: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron — Fui a un concierto (went), Fue increíble (was).
    • ¿Qué tal el fin de semana? — How was the weekend?
    • Hacer: hice, hizo; tener: tuve, tuvo; estar: estuve, estuvo — endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron, never an accent.
    • The same pattern: pude, quise, vine, supe, anduve, dije (dijeron).

    Hoy he comido, ayer comí

The pretérito perfecto — and the Spain rule for choosing it: today and this week versus yesterday and last week.

    • Pretérito perfecto = haber + participle: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han + hablado / comido / vivido.
    • In Madrid: perfecto for time that isn't over — hoy, esta semana, ya, todavía no, nunca, alguna vez.
    • Indefinido for finished time — ayer, anoche, el lunes, la semana pasada, el año pasado.
    • Hoy he comido paella but Ayer comí paella.
    • Irregular participles: hecho, dicho, visto, escrito, abierto, vuelto, puesto.
    • The Canaries and most of Latin America use the indefinido for today too: Hoy comí paella.

    La excursión a los Pirineos

Last week, two days ago, first… then… — and Marcos finally tells the story of his weekend in the mountains.

    • Finished time takes the indefinido: el fin de semana pasado, la semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año pasado.
    • Hace + time = ago: hace dos días.
    • Spelling changes in the yo form only: llegué, jugué, saqué, busqué, empecé.
    • Ver: vi, vio — no accents; andar: anduve, anduvimos.
    • Tell a story in order: primero… después… de repente… al final.
