Preferir: e → ie
Preferir (to prefer) has the same vowel change as querer: the e becomes ie in every form except nosotros and vosotros.
| Pronoun | Preferir | Querer |
|---|---|---|
| yo | prefiero | quiero |
| tú | prefieres | quieres |
| él / ella / usted | prefiere | quiere |
| nosotros | preferimos | queremos |
| vosotros | preferís | queréis |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | prefieren | quieren |
Unlike gustar, preferir is an ordinary verb: the person who prefers is the subject. It goes straight into a noun or an infinitive, with no preposition:
- Prefiero el té. — I prefer tea.
- Luana prefiere quedarse en casa. — Luana prefers to stay at home. (Quedarse, to stay, carries a pronoun that changes with the person: yo prefiero quedarme, tú prefieres quedarte.)
A classic Spanish question: ¿Prefieres playa o montaña? — Do you prefer the beach or the mountains?
