Gustar works backwards
English says I like books. Spanish turns it round: the books please me — Me gustan los libros. The thing you like is the subject, so the verb agrees with it, not with you:
- one thing → gusta: Me gusta el café.
- several things → gustan: Me gustan los libros.
- an activity — an infinitive, or several → gusta: Me gusta leer. Me gusta leer y cocinar.
Who likes it is shown by the to me, to you pronoun in front:
| Who likes it | One thing / an activity | Several things |
|---|---|---|
| (a mí) me | gusta | gustan |
| (a ti) te | gusta | gustan |
| (a él / ella / usted) le | gusta | gustan |
| (a nosotros) nos | gusta | gustan |
| (a vosotros) os | gusta | gustan |
| (a ellos / ellas / ustedes) les | gusta | gustan |
With a name, add a — and keep the le: A Luana le gusta leer. The a mí, a ti part adds emphasis or contrast: A mí me gusta el té, pero a Marcos le gusta el café.
