Este, ese, aquel: this and that

Point things out the Spanish way — near me, near you, over there — and meet eso, the handiest little word in any shop.

    • este / esta — near me (aquí); ese / esa — near you (ahí); aquel / aquella — over there (allí).
    • Plurals: estos, esos, aquellos / estas, esas, aquellas.
    • In conversation ese is the everyday that; aquel is for things clearly far away.
    • No noun? Use esto, eso, aquello: ¿Qué es eso? — and ¡Eso es! means Exactly!
    • On their own they mean this one, that one: Me llevo este.

Ropa y colores: clothes, colours, sizes

Name what you're wearing, make colours agree, ask for your size — and try it on.

    • Llevar = to wear: Luana lleva un vestido.
    • El pantalón (or los pantalones), los vaqueros and las zapatillas each mean one pair.
    • Colours follow the noun and agree: rojo / roja; verde, azul, gris change only for plural (azules); rosa and naranja usually don't change.
    • Clothes have a talla, shoes a número: Tengo la 38, Calzo un 39.
    • Quedar for fit: Me queda estrecho, Te queda genial; Me lo llevo — I'll take it.

    Más, menos, tan: comparing things

Cheaper, more practical, just as nice — compare what's on the stall with más, menos and tan, and try a little haggling at the Rastro.

    • más … que — more … than; menos … que — less … than; tan … como — as … as.
    • No -er ending in Spanish: cheaper is más barato, prettier más bonito.
    • The adjective agrees: la falda es más cara; los zapatos son más caros.
    • After a verb: cuesta menos. Before a number: más de cien euros.
    • Better is mejor and worse is peor.
    • At the Rastro you can regatear: ¿Me lo deja en…? In shops, prices are fixed.

De compras: an outfit for the party

Polite shop Spanish with usted, paying at the till — and Marina and Luana's hunt for something to wear to Marcos's party.

    • To a stranger or an older shop assistant, use usted: Disculpe, ¿tiene…?
    • ¿Cuánto cuesta…? for one thing, ¿Cuánto cuestan…? for more than one.
    • At the till: ¿Algo más? — Nos llevamos los dos. — ¿Cómo va a pagar? — Con tarjeta or en efectivo.
    • Ir arreglado — many Spaniards like to look well put together; arreglado pero informal means smart casual.
