To ask for something: ¿Tiene algo para el dolor de garganta? — Have you got anything for a sore throat? ¿Tiene algo para la tos? — for a cough? And to check: ¿Necesita receta? — Does it need a prescription?

Medicine is something you tomar: tomar una pastilla, tomar el jarabe. It's a regular -ar verb: tomo, tomas, toma, tomamos, tomáis, toman. In everyday speech you'll also hear la medicina for medicine.
