To imagine a past that didn't happen — if I had known…, I would have… — use hätte or wäre + the past participle:

Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich früher gekommen. — If I'd known that, I'd have come earlier.

Choose hätte or wäre exactly as in the Perfekt: verbs that take haben take hätte; verbs of movement and change of state — plus sein and bleiben — take wäre.

Ich habe es gewusst.	Ich hätte es gewusst.
Er hat angerufen.	Er hätte angerufen.
Wir sind gekommen.	Wir wären gekommen.
Sie ist geblieben.	Sie wäre geblieben.

In the wenn-clause, participle and hätte / wäre both go to the end — participle first: wenn du mir das gesagt hättest. In the main clause, hätte / wäre comes first and the participle closes the sentence: …, hätte ich anders reagiert.
