Review & Farewell

Bringing it all together — and a goodbye

  1. 1

    Angekommen! Telling the trip

Perfekt and Präteritum side by side — Marina's travel diary from the first days in Bavaria.

    • In conversation, most verbs go in the Perfekt: Wir sind angekommen. Ich habe ein Hemd gekauft.
    • Sein for movement and change of state (fahren, ankommen, aufstehen), haben for the rest.
    • War, hatte, gab and the modals stay in the Präteritum, even in speech.
    • Separable participles put ge in the middle — angekommen; -ieren and be-/ver-/er- verbs drop it — probiert, besucht.
    • In Bavaria: Brezn, Weißwurst before noon, and Grüß Gott.

    Welcher Hut? Shopping in Munich

Accusative endings, dieser and comparatives — all in one hat shop in Munich's old town.

    • In the accusative only the masculine changes: den, einen, diesen Hut; die Jacke and das Hemd stay the same.
    • After den or einen, adjectives end in -en: den grünen Hut.
    • Compare with -er + als: teurer als, größer als; irregular besser, lieber, mehr.
    • Never mehr teuer — and so … wie for as … as.
    • In shops: Sie, Grüß Gott in Bavaria, and Ich nehme ihn / sie / es.

Am See: modals, preferences and Sehnsucht

Können, wollen, müssen, dürfen and gern, lieber, am liebsten — on the last evening by a Bavarian lake.

    • Modal verbs take second place, the infinitive goes to the end: Bald muss ich nach Hause fliegen.
    • No zu after a modal: Wir müssen früh aufstehen.
    • Ich and er / sie / es share a form: ich darf, Bidu darf.
    • gern → lieber → am liebsten: likes, prefers, likes best.
    • Heimweh is homesickness, Fernweh the longing to be far away, Sehnsucht longing of every kind.

Bis bald: looking back, looking ahead

Past, present and future in one goodbye — and the many ways to say farewell in German.

    • A goodbye uses every tense: Es war… (Präteritum), Ich habe gelernt… (Perfekt), Jetzt spreche ich… (present), Ich werde… / Nächstes Jahr komme ich… (future).
    • After dass, the verb goes to the end: Ich verspreche, dass ich zurückkomme.
    • Als for a single moment in the past: Als ich nach Berlin kam, …
    • Goodbyes: Auf Wiedersehen (formal), Tschüss, Bis bald, Mach's gut, Gute Reise — and Servus in the south.
    • Ich hab dich lieb — the way friends and family say I love you.
