Conceito novo

No “will” needed

English needs will or going to for the future. German usually doesn't: the present tense plus a time expression does the job.

  • Morgen fahre ich nach Hamburg. — I'm going to Hamburg tomorrow.
  • Nächstes Jahr reisen wir nach Italien. — Next year we're travelling to Italy.
  • Heute Abend koche ich Spaghetti. — I'm cooking spaghetti tonight.

Even without a time word, the situation often makes it clear: Ich rufe dich an! — I'll call you!

German English
morgen tomorrow
übermorgen the day after tomorrow
heute Abend this evening, tonight
am Wochenende at the weekend
bald soon
in zwei Wochen in two weeks
nächste Woche next week
nächsten Monat next month
nächstes Jahr next year

Nächst- takes the accusative ending of its noun: die Woche → nächste Woche, der Monat → nächsten Monat, das Jahr → nächstes Jahr.
