Gern: liking an activity

English I like reading has no word-for-word German match. German takes the verb itself and adds gern — or gerne, which means exactly the same:

  • Ich lese gern. — I like reading.
  • Marcos kocht gern. — Marcos likes cooking.
  • Wir gehen gern ins Kino. — We like going to the cinema.
  • Ich tanze nicht gern. — I don't like dancing.

Gern goes after the verb, usually before the object or place: Ich trinke gern Tee. Sie spielt gern Fußball. For not, put nicht in front of it: nicht gern.
