Opinions & Debates
British understatement, hedging, and the art of disagreeing nicely
- 1
I reckon, I'd say: dar a sua opinião
De um *I reckon* suave a um *without a doubt* firme — e por que em inglês se diz *I don't think it's a good idea*.
Abrir lección- Abra a sua opinião conforme a força: I reckon / I think → I'd say → In my opinion → Without a doubt.
- I reckon é coloquial; I'd say suaviza sem tirar a força.
- Evite according to me: diga in my opinion ou I think — e não esqueça o it.
- Nega-se o think: I don't think it's a good idea.
- I think so / I don't think so / I hope so / I hope not.
- Para perguntar: What do you think of…?, What did you make of…? — nunca How do you think?

Not bad, quite good: o understatement britânico
Por que *not bad* é um elogio, *quite good* pode ser morno e *a bit of a nightmare* é um desastre.
Abrir lección- O inglês britânico suaviza: not bad = muito bom; a bit of a nightmare = um desastre; not ideal = um problema sério.
- Interesting, dito com uma pausa, costuma esconder dúvidas.
- Quite + adjetivo graduável é morno (quite good); com um adjetivo absoluto, é “completamente” (quite right).
- Not very + adjetivo positivo critica com tato: It wasn't very good.
- Para elogiar de verdade: really good, lovely, brilliant.

I couldn't agree more: concordar e discordar
*I agree* (nunca *I am agree*), *you're right*, *fair point*, *I see it differently* — e o misterioso *yeah, no*.
Abrir lección- I agree (with you) — como concordo; nunca I am agree. Na negativa, I don't agree ou I disagree.
- Você tem razão é You're right — nunca you have reason.
- Concordância: I suppose so → fair enough → exactly → I couldn't agree more.
- Discordância com tato: I'm not so sure, I see your point, but…, I see it differently.
- On the contrary é forte: use com moderação.
- No yeah, no, o que conta é o que vem depois.

Mind you, having said that: conectores para debater
Os conectores que costuram um argumento à britânica — e dois falsos amigos perigosos: *actually* e *eventually*.
Abrir lección- On the one hand…, on the other… — sempre com on, nunca by.
- Mind you acrescenta um porém, como se bem que; having said that / that said relativiza o que você acabou de dizer.
- To be fair, then again e at the end of the day são de conversa; num e-mail, however.
- Actually = na verdade; atualmente = currently / at the moment.
- Eventually = no fim; eventualmente = occasionally.
