Eu viajava: the spoken would
In conversation, Brazilians very often use the imperfect where the textbook puts the conditional. Only the would half changes — the se half keeps the imperfect subjunctive:
| Written or careful | Everyday speech |
|---|---|
| Se eu tivesse dinheiro, eu viajaria. | Se eu tivesse dinheiro, eu viajava. |
| Se eu pudesse, eu iria. | Se eu pudesse, eu ia. |
| Isso seria ótimo. | Isso ia ser ótimo. |
| Você poderia me ajudar? | Você podia me ajudar? |
Both columns are correct; the right-hand one simply sounds relaxed. Ia + infinitive is especially common: Se eu morasse na praia, eu ia nadar todo dia.
Don't change the se half, though: Se eu tinha dinheiro, eu viajava means something else — whenever I had money (back then), I travelled.
