Memories

The imperfect — and how it's different from the perfect

  1. 1

Eu brincava: the past of old habits

A second past tense for what you used to do — with endings regular enough to learn in one go.

    • The imperfeito is the past of habits and ongoing situations — used to, would, or a plain past in English.
    • Endings: -ava for -ar verbs, -ia for -er and -ir verbs: brincava, comia, assistia.
    • Eu and ele / ela share a form; nós takes an accent: brincávamos, comíamos.
    • Signal words: antigamente, naquela época, sempre, todo dia, aos domingos.
    • Quando eu era criança… — the classic way to start a memory.

Era, tinha, vinha, punha: setting the scene

The only four verbs that break the imperfect pattern — and how to say what things were like: age, weather, feelings.

    • Only four verbs are irregular in the imperfect: ser (era), ter (tinha), vir (vinha), pôr (punha).
    • Ir is regular here: ia, íamos, iam.
    • The imperfect sets the scene: age (tinha sete anos), descriptions (era pequena), feelings (estava cansada), the time (eram oito horas).
    • Weather: fazia calor / frio, or estava quente.
    • Costumava + infinitive = used to: Eu costumava ir à praia.

  3. 3

Eu estava em casa quando…: two pasts together

The imperfect sets the scene, the perfect tells what happened — how Brazilians tell a story in the past.

    • Stories need both pasts: the imperfeito for the scene, the perfeito for what happened.
    • Eu estava em casa quando o telefone tocou — background first, then the event.
    • Something in progress: estava + -ndo — Eu estava dormindo.
    • Clues: ontem, de repente, uma vez → perfeito; enquanto, sempre, antigamente → imperfeito.
    • Conheci = I met; conhecia = I knew.

O álbum de fotos: childhood memories

Kites, hide-and-seek and a mother calling from the window — talking about childhood, and the Brazilian art of saudade.

    • Childhood words: a infância, o quintal, andar de bicicleta, soltar pipa, jogar bola.
    • Games take brincar de — brincar de esconde-esconde; sports take jogar.
    • Quando + imperfect + imperfect = whenever: Quando chovia, a gente ficava em casa.
    • Vir → vinha: O meu avô vinha me buscar.
    • Saudade is fond longing: Que saudade daquela época!
