The most common verbs are irregular in the past — and two of them share every form. Ser (to be) and ir (to go) are identical in the pretérito perfeito:

Context tells them apart. With a place after a or para, it's ir; with a description, it's ser:

• Eu fui à praia. — I went to the beach.
• A festa foi ótima. — The party was great.

The question you'll hear every Monday: Como foi o fim de semana? — How was the weekend? — Foi ótimo!
