Regular -er and -ir verbs at the street market

  1. 1

Comer, beber, abrir: the -er and -ir verbs

Two more regular verb families — close siblings of the -ar pattern you already know.

    • Regular -er verbs: drop -er, add -o, -e, -emos, -em — como, come, comemos, comem.
    • Regular -ir verbs: drop -ir, add -o, -e, -imos, -em — abro, abre, abrimos, abrem.
    • The two families differ only in nós, which keeps the infinitive's vowel: comemos / abrimos.
    • New verbs: beber (to drink), escrever (to write), partir (to cut; to set off), dividir (to share, to split).
    • A gente takes the ele/ela form: a gente come, a gente divide.

    What's on the table

Everyday food and drink, the afternoon lanche — and how to say what you like.

    • Core food words: o arroz, o feijão, a carne, o frango, o peixe, o pão, o queijo; drinks: a água, o suco, o café, o leite, a cerveja.
    • Gostar de = to like — always with de: Eu gosto de café.
    • de + o = do, de + a = da for specific things: Gosto do café do Marcos.
    • Negate with não before the verb: Não gosto de peixe.
    • Brazilians tomam drinks: tomar um café. The lanche da tarde is the afternoon coffee-and-snack break.

    Ordering and paying

Order politely with “Eu queria…”, ask for what you need and split the bill.

    • Eu queria… is the polite way to order — a fixed phrase meaning I'd like, with no de after it.
    • Pode me trazer…? asks for something; Para mim, … gives your order when it's your turn.
    • A conta, por favor — the bill only comes when you ask. Call the waiter with Moço! or Moça!
    • Dividir = to share, to split: divido, divide, dividimos, dividem. A gente divide a conta?
    • Water is com gás (sparkling) or sem gás (still).

    Na Feira: street food

Pastel, caldo de cana and tapioca — Marina's first morning at a Brazilian feira.

    • A feira is a weekly street market; pastel com caldo de cana is its classic pairing.
    • Tapioca is a cassava-starch wrap from the Nordeste, made na hora and either doce or salgada.
    • Ask prices with Quanto custa…? and the total with Quanto é? Prices are in reais.
    • Name fillings with de: pastel de queijo, pastel de carne, suco de laranja.
    • Experimentar = to try a food; Você precisa experimentar!
