The imperfetto
The passato prossimo tells what happened: Ieri ho giocato a calcio. For what used to happen — habits, routines, the way things were — Italian has a second past, the imperfetto: Da bambino giocavo a calcio tutti i giorni. — As a child I used to play football every day.
It's wonderfully regular. Drop the -re of the infinitive and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano:
| Pronoun | Giocare | Leggere | Dormire |
|---|---|---|---|
| io | giocavo | leggevo | dormivo |
| tu | giocavi | leggevi | dormivi |
| lui / lei | giocava | leggeva | dormiva |
| noi | giocavamo | leggevamo | dormivamo |
| voi | giocavate | leggevate | dormivate |
| loro | giocavano | leggevano | dormivano |
The vowel before the ending — a, e, i — is simply the one from the infinitive. Watch the stress in loro: gioCAvano, legGEvano, dorMIvano.
