Giocare or suonare?

English plays both football and the guitar. Italian doesn't:

Italian English
giocare a calcio / a tennis / a carte to play football / tennis / cards
suonare la chitarra / il pianoforte to play the guitar / the piano
fare sport / una passeggiata to do sport / to go for a walk
andare in bicicletta to ride a bike
andare al mare / in montagna to go to the seaside / to the mountains
  • Giocare takes a before the game, with no article: gioco a calcio.
  • An instrument takes suonare and the article: suono la chitarra.

Giocare keeps its hard c sound by adding an h before i and e: tu giochi, noi giochiamo.
