Possessive adjectives and the household

  1. 1

    Il mio, la tua: possessives

My, your, his, her, our, their — possessives that agree with the thing owned and come with an article.

    • Possessives agree with the thing owned and usually take the article: il mio libro, la mia casa.
    • Plurals: i miei, i tuoi, i suoi — le mie, le tue, le sue.
    • Suo / sua = his or her (and polite your): Luana e il suo cane.
    • Loro never changes: il loro cane, la loro casa.
    • Set phrases drop the article: a casa mia, Mamma mia!

    • Furniture: il tavolo, la sedia, il divano, il letto, l'armadio, il frigorifero.
    • In a room: in cucina, in bagno, in camera — no article.

Mia madre, i miei nonni: the family

Family words, and the one rule that makes possessives drop their article: mia madre, but i miei genitori.

    • padre / madre, fratello / sorella, nonno / nonna, zio / zia, figlio / figlia, marito / moglie.
    • I genitori = parents; i parenti = relatives; i fratelli can be brothers and sisters.
    • One family member, singular: no article — mia madre, tuo fratello, sua sorella.
    • The article comes back in the plural, with loro and with adjectives — and usually with mamma / papà: i miei nonni, il loro padre, la mia mamma.

    Il pranzo della domenica

Whose is it? Possession with di, “it's mine” without an article — and Sunday lunch at Marcos's parents' house.

    • No 's in Italian: la casa di Marcos, la cucina della nonna.
    • Whose? Di chi è…? / Di chi sono…?
    • After essere, possessives drop the article: È mio. Sono nostre.
    • They still agree with the thing owned: la borsa → è mia; gli occhiali → sono tuoi.
    • Il pranzo della domenica: a long family lunch — bring paste, flowers or wine.
