Getting Around the City

Regular -are verbs and directions

  1. 1

    Parlo, cammino, compro: -are verbs

The biggest verb family in Italian — one set of endings for hundreds of verbs, plus how to say “not”.

    • Regular -are verbs: -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano (parlo, parli, parla, parliamo, parlate, parlano).
    • The loro form keeps the stress of io: PAR-lano, COM-prano.
    • -care / -gare verbs add an h before i: cerchi, cerchiamo.
    • Non goes straight before the verb: Non parlo tedesco.
    • The present also means “I'm doing”: Parlo italiano = I speak / I'm speaking Italian.

Name the places in an Italian town, say what's there with c'è and ci sono, and ask where things are.

    • Libreria = bookshop; biblioteca = library.
    • C'è (there is) / ci sono (there are) — dov'è / dove sono? (where is / are?).
    • Location: vicino a, lontano da, accanto a, davanti a, di fronte a.
    • a + il = al, a + la = alla, a + l' = all': accanto al bar, di fronte alla chiesa.

Mi scusi! Speaking to strangers with Lei

Use verbs with the polite Lei, catch a stranger's attention, and buy a bus ticket at the tabaccheria.

    • Lei takes the lui / lei form of every verb: parla, cerca, è, ha, sta.
    • The word Lei is usually left out: Parla inglese?
    • Catch a stranger's attention with Mi scusi or Scusi; Permesso! to get past.
    • Vorrei…, per favore is the polite way to ask for anything.
    • Bus tickets come from the tabaccheria — remember to stamp them (timbrare) on board.
