Two new compound tenses
To imagine a different past — something that didn't happen — French needs two compound tenses. Both are built exactly like the passé composé, with the same auxiliary (avoir or être) and the same agreement. Only the auxiliary changes tense:
| Passé composé | Plus-que-parfait (had done) | Conditionnel passé (would have done) |
|---|---|---|
| j'ai su | j'avais su | j'aurais su |
| tu as pris | tu avais pris | tu aurais pris |
| nous avons vu | nous avions vu | nous aurions vu |
| je suis resté(e) | j'étais resté(e) | je serais resté(e) |
| elle est partie | elle était partie | elle serait partie |
| ils sont venus | ils étaient venus | ils seraient venus |
- Plus-que-parfait = auxiliary in the imparfait + past participle.
- Conditionnel passé = auxiliary in the conditional + past participle.
The third si pattern puts them together — si + plus-que-parfait, then the conditionnel passé: Si j'avais su, je serais venue. — If I'd known, I'd have come.
