A one-word future
You already have the near future, aller + infinitive: Je vais partir. — I'm going to leave. French has a second future, the futur simple, in a single word: Je partirai. — I'll leave.
The recipe is short: take the infinitive and add -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. Verbs in -re drop their final e first: prendre → prendr-.
| Pronoun | Parler | Finir | Prendre |
|---|---|---|---|
| je | parlerai | finirai | prendrai |
| tu | parleras | finiras | prendras |
| il / elle / on | parlera | finira | prendra |
| nous | parlerons | finirons | prendrons |
| vous | parlerez | finirez | prendrez |
| ils / elles | parleront | finiront | prendront |
The endings are almost the present of avoir: j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Every future form has an r just before the ending.
One more verb for this lesson: oublier — to forget → j'oublierai, I'll forget.
