If-Sentences and Hypotheticals

Unreal conditions, present and past

  1. 1

    Jos minulla olisi…: if I had…

Unreal if-sentences put the conditional in both halves — and a million-euro daydream at Marina's flat.

    • Unreal if: the conditional in both halves — Jos minulla olisi aikaa, tulisin.
    • Never the plain past for a daydream: jos minulla ~~oli~~ → olisi.
    • Either half can come first; the comma always stands before jos.
    • Mitä tekisit, jos…? — What would you do if…?
    • Jos olisin rikas… — If I were rich…

Jos sataa or jos sataisi: real or imagined?

A real possibility keeps the plain present; a daydream takes -isi-. Luana plans Midsummer at the cottage.

    • A real possibility: present in both halves — Jos sataa, jäämme kotiin.
    • An imagined one: conditional in both — Jos sataisi, jäisimme kotiin.
    • Entä jos…? + conditional — what if…?
    • Jospa…? + conditional — a gentle suggestion: how about…?
    • Meillä ei ole autoa, joten… — we haven't got a car, so…

Jos olisin jäänyt…: the roads not taken

Olisin + the -nut participle: what would have happened — on the train home from the lake.

    • Past conditional = olisin, olisit, olisi… + -nut / -nyt (plural -neet): olisin tullut, olisimme tulleet.
    • Both halves for a past that didn't happen: Jos olisin tiennyt, olisin tullut.
    • Negative: en olisi tullut, emme olisi tavanneet.
    • Regret, Finnish style: olisi pitänyt…, ei olisi pitänyt…, olisi voinut mennä paremmin.
    • Past if, present result: Jos en olisi tullut, en puhuisi nyt suomea.

    Ikään kuin: as if

Kuin and ikään kuin + the conditional — and Marina's diary from Midsummer at the lake.

    • kuin / ikään kuin + conditional = as if: Hän puhuu, ikään kuin tietäisi kaiken.
    • Past conditional for the past: Tuntuu, kuin olisin tullut eilen.
    • Spoken: ihan kuin — just as if.
    • Comparison kuin (than) takes an ordinary verb: pitempi kuin minä.
    • Näytät siltä, kuin olisit nähnyt aaveen — you look as if you'd seen a ghost.
