Where's the “please”?
English speakers soon notice that Finnish has no everyday word for please. The politeness is built into the verb instead: a question in the conditional sounds warm and considerate, where the plain present can sound abrupt.
| Plain | Polite (conditional) | English |
|---|---|---|
| Saanko kahvin? | Saisinko kahvin? | Could I have a coffee? |
| Voitko auttaa? | Voisitko auttaa minua? | Could you help me? |
| Haluan varata pöydän. | Haluaisin varata pöydän. | I'd like to book a table. |
| Onko sinulla hetki? | Olisiko sinulla hetki aikaa? | Would you have a moment? |
Add kiitos at the end and you've got the full Finnish please: Saisinko laskun, kiitos? — Could I have the bill, please?
The question ending -ko / -kö simply goes on after the conditional: saisinko, voisitko, olisiko.
