No -i- in the negative
In the negative past, the -i- form disappears. Instead you use the negative verb you know — en, et, ei, emme, ette, eivät — plus a participle ending in -nut / -nyt (one person) or -neet (more than one):
| puhua | syödä | |
|---|---|---|
| minä | en puhunut | en syönyt |
| sinä | et puhunut | et syönyt |
| hän | ei puhunut | ei syönyt |
| me | emme puhuneet | emme syöneet |
| te | ette puhuneet | ette syöneet |
| he | eivät puhuneet | eivät syöneet |
The negative verb tells you who; the participle tells you how many. Vowel harmony picks -nut (back vowels) or -nyt (front vowels).
Compare: en puhu — I don't speak · en puhunut — I didn't speak.
