Liking: pitää + -sta / -stä

To say you like something, Finnish uses pitää — and the thing you like takes the -sta / -stä ending, the from ending you met with mistä in unit 6. Literally, you “hold from” it.

Finnish English
Pidän kahvista. I like coffee.
Pidätkö musiikista? Do you like music?
Hän ei pidä talvesta. He / she doesn't like winter.
Pidämme Helsingistä. We like Helsinki.

Watch the gradation: t → d in pidän, pidät, pidämme, pidätte and in the negative en pidä, but pitää and pitävät for hän and he.

People take the ending too: minusta, sinusta, hänestä, meistä, teistä, heistä. And it is siitä: Pidän siitä. — I like it.
