Stem + ending
Finnish verbs work like Lego. Take the dictionary form — puhua (to speak) — remove the final -a / -ä to get the stem puhu-, then snap on the ending for the person:
| Pronoun | Ending | puhua (to speak) | asua (to live) | ostaa (to buy) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| minä | -n | puhun | asun | ostan |
| sinä | -t | puhut | asut | ostat |
| hän | vowel doubles | puhuu | asuu | ostaa |
| me | -mme | puhumme | asumme | ostamme |
| te | -tte | puhutte | asutte | ostatte |
| he | -vat / -vät | puhuvat | asuvat | ostavat |
You've seen these endings before: olen, olet, olemme, olette — olla follows the same pattern, apart from on and ovat.
