Olla — to be
The single most important Finnish verb is olla, to be. Each person has its own form:
| Pronoun | Olla | English |
|---|---|---|
| minä | olen | I am |
| sinä | olet | you are |
| hän | on | he / she is |
| me | olemme | we are |
| te | olette | you are (two or more) |
| he | ovat | they are |
The ending tells you who is meant — so clearly that Finns usually drop minä, sinä, me and te: Olen Marina. — I'm Marina. Olemme Helsingissä. — We're in Helsinki.
Hän and he stay: Hän on Luana. — She's Luana. (On Luana on its own would be incomplete.)
