Refresher: comparing

Travelling invites comparisons: this beach or that one, Ibiza or Madrid, here or home.

Pattern Example English
más … que más pequeña que smaller than
menos … que menos caro que less expensive than
tan … como tan bonita como as pretty as
el / la más … de la playa más bonita de la isla the most beautiful beach on the island

Four adjectives have their own forms. Bueno becomes mejor and malo becomes peor: when you mean better or worse, say mejor que and peor que — and never más mejor. Mayor and menor mostly compare age — mi hermano mayor, my older brother; for size, más grande and más pequeño are the everyday choice.

  • Bidu está más feliz que nunca. — Bidu is happier than ever.
  • Before a number, than is de: Comimos más de tres helados. — We ate more than three ice creams.
