Going to…

The everyday way to talk about the future is ir in the present + a + an infinitive — just like English going to:

Pronoun Ir + a + infinitive English
yo voy a viajar I'm going to travel
tú vas a comer you're going to eat
él / ella / usted va a comprar he's / she's going to buy
nosotros vamos a salir we're going to go out
vosotros vais a nadar you're going to swim
ellos / ellas / ustedes van a dormir they're going to sleep
  • Only ir changes; the second verb stays in the infinitive.
  • Don't drop the a: Voy a viajar, never voy viajar.
  • In conversation it covers English will as well: Mañana voy a trabajar. — I'll be working tomorrow.
  • Vamos a + infinitive can also mean let's: ¡Vamos a comer! — Let's eat!
