The pretérito indefinido
To say what happened — an action that began and ended at a definite point in the past — Spanish uses the pretérito indefinido: Ayer hablé con mi madre. (Yesterday I spoke to my mum.)
Regular verbs work just like the present: drop the -ar, -er or -ir and add the past endings.
| Pronoun | Hablar | Comer | Abrir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablé | comí | abrí |
| tú | hablaste | comiste | abriste |
| él / ella / usted | habló | comió | abrió |
| nosotros | hablamos | comimos | abrimos |
| vosotros | hablasteis | comisteis | abristeis |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hablaron | comieron | abrieron |
-er and -ir verbs share one set of endings. And mind the accents: they carry meaning. hablo is I speak, but habló is he spoke.
